Atanasovsko Lake – home to rare bird species

Photo: BGNES

The Atanasovsko Lake near the Bulgarian coastal city of Burgas has become a true home to beautiful rare birds, according to environmentalists. It seems the most attractive birds to tourists are the numerous pink flamingo birds that find peace and security in the quiet waters in the northern part of the lake. Currently 159 birds are living there. This is the highest number of pink flamingos in Bulgaria after 126 birds were officially counted in the lake last autumn. Ornithologists say the birds have come to Burgas from the Maritza Delta or from other regions in Turkey. Tourists can see many other beautiful rare birds in the lake such as pink pelican, red knot (Calidris canutus), and spotted redshank (Tringa erythropus). Atanasovsko Lake is part of the Natura 2000 protected area and efforts for its preservation have led to considerable results.
