Today we celebrate the Feast of the Circumcision of the Lord and St Basil the Great

The Bulgarian Orthodox Church today celebrates the Feast of the Circumcision of the Lord. On the eighth day after his birth, Christ was taken to the Temple to be consecrated to God and to carry out the tradition of circumcision.

Believers today also honour Saint Basil the Great, one of the great philosophers and writers of the early Christian Church. Born into a noble Christian family in the city of Caesarea Cappadocia around 350 AD, the theologian was the author of numerous church books as well as the Liturgy of Saint Basil, which is celebrated several times a year in his honour.
Folklore tradition associates the feast of St Basil the Great with the custom of survakane, performed for good health on the first day of the New Year. Today almost 130 thousand people celebrate his name day.
