Twenty-six people have been detained in a police operation in Hristo Botev residential district in Sofia. The operation is against vote buying for the upcoming elections on June 9. However, some people were detained for other crimes. Initially only 7 people were arrested for vote buying.
Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated against them, explained the Director of the Sofia Metropolitan Directorate of Interior Chief Commissioner Lyubomir Nikolov. In his words, one vote in the capital city is traded between BGN 50 and 100 (EUR 25-50). A list of names and phone numbers was found at one of the addresses, with sums of money written down next to them. The number of alerts for vote buying and the initiated pre-trial proceedings were higher than in previous years, said Lyubomir Nikolov.
