The renovation of the Kulata border checkpoint has begun in connection with Bulgaria's upcoming entry into Schengen on January 1. There will be two lanes in each direction before the checkpoint. A new 200-meter lane is being built on Bulgarian territory at the entrance from Promachonas at the expense of the removed sidewalk. The opposite lane is also being widened by one metre, again at the expense of the sidewalk, reports BGNES. No commercial buildings have been demolished in the area where the new lane is being built.
The renovation is expected to be completed by December 31 and will ensure smoother passage for all vehicles after Bulgaria’s accession to Schengen. Traffic in the area of the checkpoint is being managed by Traffic Police officers until the completion of the construction.
