Within seven days, the government will propose amendments to the Law on the Introduction of the Euro, setting out additional measures to tackle unjustified price hikes. Penalties will be more severe, and the legal powers of the Commission for Consumer Protection (CCP) will be expanded.

This decision was made at a meeting of the national coordination mechanism to oversee the monitoring and control processes related to the country’s upcoming adoption of the euro, convened by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, the government press service announced.

Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova pointed out that the law currently only allows sanctions during the dual circulation period of the euro and the lev, from 1 to 31 January 2026. However, to protect consumers, this period will be extended to begin with the dual display of prices and end on 31 December 2026.
