BNR Folk Orchestra Opens 73rd Season with Georgi Dobrev’s “Plovdiv Melodies”

The Bulgarian National Radio Folk Orchestra is kicking off its 73rd season. On 16 October, 7pm sharp, Studio One will host the opening concert – a night of premieres written exclusively for this legendary ensemble.


Under the baton of maestro Dimitar Hristov, the orchestra will play brand new works – pieces already laid down in the Radio’s vaults, but now stepping out into the spotlight for their first live performance. Producer Kristian Nedelchev puts it straight: the programme shines a light on the double life of these players – both guardians of tradition and fearless creators pushing the boundaries of Bulgarian folk.

It’s not just the orchestra’s own soloists who’ll take the stage. Three chamber groups from within the band are stepping forward too, plus a handful of guest musicians bringing their own fresh premieres.

And for the grand finale? The spotlight falls on young kaval virtuoso Georgi Dobrev. Backed by the full might of the BNR Folk Orchestra, he closes the night with his original piece Plovdiv Melodies – arranged and conducted by Hristov himself.
