In the 2024/2025 academic year, 2,104 students from Ukraine were studying at Bulgarian universities, according to the Ministry of Education. Of these, 1,750 were pursuing bachelor’s degrees, 304 were in master’s programmes, and 50 were enrolled in doctoral studies.
Most — 1,287 students — were admitted under legislation for foreign citizens of Bulgarian descent, while another 43 hold dual citizenship, including Bulgarian.
Igor Solovyov, 22, came to Bulgaria following the start of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. Speaking to BTA, he said that, compared with Ukrainian universities, where education tends to be more theoretical, Bulgarian universities focus more on practical training.
Igor gave advice for future students of Bulgarian descent from Ukraine. "First, make sure you understand the rules for documents — the laws and decrees for ethnic Bulgarians living abroad. Stay informed and ask people who have been there before. It's a good idea to learn Bulgarian before you apply, as it'll help you settle in. And most importantly, don't be afraid to try and explore opportunities."
