The Courthouse has a unit for external surveillance, which is led by the former director of the Internal Security Directorate, Stefan Bankov, who was fired in 2021 for violating the Code of Ethics of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Deputy Chief Prosecutor Borislav Sarafov told the BNR.

He added that it conducts illegal following, surveillance and recording of political, economic and domestic opponents

Sarafov also said that the chief prosecutor Ivan Geshev directly influences the beliefs of the supervising prosecutors in the important cases.  According to him, the cases that are currently being activated are agreed with him personally.

"You don't think that the supervising prosecutors, of their own free will, have suddenly decided to actively force the investigation," emphasized Sarafov.

He defined the phenomenon as "severe perversion and use of the prosecutor's office in favor of Ivan Geshev's personal interest."

According to Sarafov, the cases about the drawers with gold bars and bundles of cash in the bedroom of the former prime minister and GERB leader Boyko Borisov and about "Barcelonagate", where his name is also involved, are under Geshev's personal control and he sets the pace of the investigation.
