Bulgarian Ombudsman demands a mechanism for deletion from the Central Credit Register

Bulgaria's Ombudsman Velislava Delcheva proposed to the Bulgarian National Bank to amend Regulation 22 on the Central Credit Register, so that an interested individual can request deletion of information about indebtedness from the register after his credit agreement has been declared null and void by the court. The Ombudsman points out that in this way the rights and interests of citizens will be effectively protected, because contracts declared null and void do not give rise to legal action.

The reason for the proposal is the numerous complaints in which citizens express dissatisfaction that despite court decisions declaring the nullity of credit agreements, their names continue to be in the register as debtors with a bad credit record. This, in turn, is an obstacle to the granting of loans by banks or financial institutions, the Ombudsman points out.
