One of the most significant events on Bulgaria’s cultural calendar - the Festival of Opera and Ballet Art in Stara Zagora - traditionally will open with a premiere by the host company, the Stara Zagora State Opera.
On November 21 and 22, Bulgaria’s first opera company outside the capital Sofia will, for the first time in its century-long history, present the opera Andrea Chénier — the work that made Umberto Giordano a renowned composer. The production is directed by Ognyan Draganov, with internationally acclaimed conductor Pavel Baleff making his debut on the stage of the Stara Zagora State Opera with this performance.





The festival will conclude on December 7 with the newest Wagner title in the repertoire of Bulgaria’s Sofia Opera - Tannhäuser. This production opened the Wagner Festival of the Sofia Opera in the summer of 2025.
